LANCASHIRE, though the Eleven began in hardly the most promising style with the one exception of Notts, could claim to be the best county of the year . Of the14matches against the principal counties they won10 and lost only one- the first match with Nottingham . Two engagements were also made with Somersetshire . Both these were, of course , won, but three of the four outside matches with M.C.C & G. , Cambridge University (2) andAustralians were lost. Mr. Hornby, owing to an injured shoulder , was not in his best form at the com- mencement of the year , but he was playing good cricket at the finish , though never quite the same batsman as the previous year . Barlow has hardly ever been in better batting form. Someof his performances were extraordinary . Robinson was a little out of luck in the early matches, but hit with great success towards the close . In bowling Lancashire was exceedingly strong , stronger ,perhaps , even than Notts and at the close of the season, on paper, if any- thing, they were all round the better Eleven.
