It was never able , owing to a series of misfortunes , to place anything like its best eleven in the field . Illness prevented Mr. FrankPennand the Hon. Ivo Bligh from taking part in anyof the matches . Mr. Cunliffe , too , was awayfrom Englandon account of ill- health ; and Mr. Alfred Penn was injured early in the season , and only rarely available . In addition , too , the eleven were singularly unfortunate in losing the toss. Seventimes in succession LordHarris lost the choice; and with the little bowling Kenthad, its chances under such circumstances were materi- ally prejudiced . Of the nine Countymatches, only two were won, and six lost . Thosewiththe Australians and M.Č.C.andGroundalso resulted in reverses . LordHarris's batting was the feature of the season , and his average of 41.13 will speak for itself . Mr. W. H. Patterson , Mr. Tylecote , and George Hearne wereall successful with the bat, and Mr. Tylecote's 101 against the Australians wasone of the best performances of the season . TheCountyintroduced avery promising young amateur in Mr. C. W. Wilson of Cambridge University . H e plays very hard and straight , and bids fair to be a fine all -round cricketer . The wantof reliable bowling was still Kent's weak point . It has a strong batting side whenin full force ; but its bowling was very moderate, more so even than of late years .
