7 8 LILLYWHITE'SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. the persons of capable professionals , mostly naturalised , until at the present time Mr. Hornby, whose untiring zeal and example have conduced m u c hto the county's advancement, has at his disposal an Eleven, not only formidable both in bowling and batting , but without doubt the best fielding side of any shire in England . The record of 1881 is one of which the Lancashire players maywell be proud. Of thirteen matches, ten resulted in their favour , nine with unmistakable majorities and six with morethan an innings to spare . All the three undecided gameswere drawnvery m u c hin their favour , and the only occasion when the finish was at all calculated to trouble them was in the first meeting with Yorkshire , when luck favoured them materially just at the close . Their defeat by Cambridge University at Liverpool was the one speck in a most brilliant season , and then Mr. A. G. Steel was not only arrayed against them, but did all the execution at least with the ball . Taken at every point of the game, the Lancashire Eleven were deservedly the champions of the year.
