Jones was only seen at the commencementof the season and Kent, which, whenproperly represented , could place a very strong team in the field , had never anything like its best force . In bowling ,the County was weaker than ever. Messrs . Foord-Kelcey and Alfred Penn played rarely , O'Shaughnessy's slow round-arm proved to be a great failure in comparison with former years , and Wootton was not quite as successful as in 1880. Collins played fairly well at Canterbury, and against Derbyshire at Maidstone , but none of the colts were apparently good enough to be tried regularly , and the only promising feature in the summary of Kentish cricket was the presence of two such excellent recruits to the batting strength of the County as Messrs. E. F. S. Tylecote and Renny-Tailyour , though the latter was merely a re -appearance . Mr. W. H. Patterson played in almost all the matches of the season andbatted consistently well through- out, but George Hearne shows a material falling off in his average, as does Mr. Mackinnon, who throughout did nothing worthy of his old re- putation for defence . Kentwith its best eleven could not have been sanguine of its prospects against Lancashire , but with the Hon. Ivo Bligh and the brothers Penn away, its chances were decidedly of the smallest . Messrs. Patterson and R. S. Jones showed fair cricket , but the bowling of Mr. Appleby , and Watson, Nash and Barlow , was altogether too much for the "tail ," and
