Kentwas certainly altogether out of luck in 1881, though the circum- stances which combinedto produce a series of reverses were only these to which a county chiefly dependent on amateurs must always be liable . Ill- health necessitated a sea-voyage for Mr. Cunliffe , whose bowling had been so serviceable during the previous season , andthis wasthe first of a succession of disappointments . Lord Harris opened the season most auspiciously at Derby, but owing to absence from Englandthe Countylost his services for mostof the season, and from this blow it never recovered . Then, again, Hon. Ivo Bligh and Mr. Frank Penn were unable to play much owing to
