James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882
T H E C O U N T I E SIN 1881. 7 1 had affected the wicket so much that the bowling of Lillywhite and Mr. Bettesworth took every kind of turn but that usually expected . Only two hours andten minutes wereleft whenHampshirebegan their second innings , but all were out in the time, and Sussex won with only four minutes to spare . Sussex, 224 and 288 ; total , 512. Hants, 229 and86 ; total , 315. Lillywhite (2nd Innings Hants) O v e r s. 3 4 . 1 (2) Hantsv. Sussex. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 1 8 3 1 5 Southampton , July 4, 5, and 6, 1881 . A sin the first match, Hampshirehad the lead on the first innings , but theheat wasvery great throughout the match, and the effects were visible in the lack of energy with which the gamewas pursued on both sides . The narrow limits of the ground were in favour of hitting , and the weak bowling of Hantswas supported bysuch weakfielding that mostof the Sussex batsmen got runs in the second innings , though Mr. Bettesworth's 77 was far and away the best score . Mr. Lacey showed some good cricket each time for Hants, but the second display of the eleven altogether was feeble , and Sussex won again this time by 162 runs . Sussex , 166 and 310 ; total , 476 . Hampshire, 193 and 121 ; total , 314. (3) Hampshirev. Somersetshire. Bath, July 18 and 19, 1881. Fine weather , a good wicket , and little bowling on either side . Every thing was in favour of high scoring , but Hampshire was not so well repre- sented as it might have been, and its eleven only made a poor show . Messrs . H. F. Fox (74) and F. Sainsbury (54) made exactly the same number of runs as the Hampshire eleven from the bat in the first innings . Mr. Fowler hit well at the close for Somersetshire , scoring 45 out of 61 for one wicket . Hampshire lost by nine wickets . Somersetshire , 223 and 61 (one wicket down); total , 284. Hampshire , 137 and 146 ; total , 283 . (4) Hampshirev. Somersetshire. Southampton, August 29 and30, 1881 . Somersetshire was only poorly represented , but luck was decidedly with them, and this had no inconsiderable effect on the result . Somersetshire went inwith the wicket easy after rain , and, indeed , it was only an opportune shower , when the ground was playing false , that saved Hampshire from a follow on. Somersetshire , 173 and 183 ; total , 356. Hampshire , 108 and 104; total , 212. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets.
