Russell Bencraft , St. Mary's, Southampton. Hampshire, unless some very noticeable change takes place very soon in its fortunes , will , it is to be feared , lose its position in County cricket . Already, more than one of the younger shires is quite able to contest its right to a place in the foremost rank , and there is certainly , at present , very slight indication that Hampshire will be restored to the prominence it deserves as the nursery of the game. All the five matches in which the eleven were engaged resulted in decisive defeats , and as their opponents were only Sussex , Somersetshire , and weak elevens of the M.C.C. and Ground, the summary is a very discouraging one , R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Sussex had mustered a strong eleven , and Hampshire's chances were fairly ruined by ill luck on the third day. The matchhas usually produced somebig scoring , and this meeting was no exception to the rule . Hamp- shire suffered considerably by not having a wicket -keeper who would stand up to the sticks , and their loose fielding was another very important factor in the success of Sussex. In the first innings Hampshirewas five runs to the good, but missed catches gave Messrs. M. P. Lucas and Ellis more than one life on the second afternoon , and at the close of the day Sussex hadmade 210 for three wickets , Mr. Lucas not out for 131. The very first ball on the third morning settled Mr. Lucas , and the rain during the night
