6 6 LILLYWHITE'SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. (4) Gloucestershire v. Notts. Nottingham, July 28, 29, 30, 1881 . It was thought that Notts, without one of the seven professionals w h o were at variance with the County Committee , would have no possible chance against the Gloucestershire team. These expectations were not fulfilled , andindeed at one time it seemedas if a thorough surprise was in store . Mainly through the good batting of the colt Attewell (46), Wright , and E. Mills , Notts were able to claim a lead of 85 runs on the first in- nings, andhadtheir fielding been only ordinarily true whenGloucestershire wentin a second time they would very nearly have w o n. A sit was, Mr. W .G. Gracebadly missed at short slip whenhe had madethree , was not got rid of till he had attained 188 , and Mr. Moberly (83) had also a life early in his innings . Mr. Grace's 188 is the highest score madein a County matchon the Trent Bridge Ground, and considering the frequent stoppages fromrain, it was a remarkable performance. The Gloucestershire second total of 483 was the largest total made by a County Eleven during the season. Thematch was drawn. Notts, 240. Gloucestershire , 155and483; total, 638. (5) Gloucestershire v. Notts . Clifton , Aug. 4, 5, 1881. After the huge score made by Gloucestershire at Nottingham in the previous week, their victory in this home match was regarded quite as a certainty . Flowers, it is true, for the first time since the open rupture between the seven Nottingham professionals and the County Committee appeared in the team, but the other six were all absent , and no one would haveventured to predict that this inferior eleven of Notts would be able to claim a record as the first County to defeat Gloucestershire on the Clifton ground. The start was by no means favourable for Notts , as six wickets were down for 76, and those of the best bats- menon the side . Even when the innings was over for 163, there was still the same feeling that Gloucestershire would have things much their own way. That without Shaw, Morley , and Barnes , the Nottinghamshire eleven could be able to get rid of such a batting team as that of Glouces- tershire for an aggregate of 179 in two innings , would have before the match been voted as incredible . Yet, thanks to a most extraordinary piece of bowling by Flowers on the first day, such was the case , and Notts intheendwere able to gain a well deserved victory by ten wickets . The wicket was at the time a little soft on the top, and helped Flowers to get considerable work on the ball , but, under any circumstances , his perform- ance was an extraordinary one . Notts , 163 and 17 (no wickets ) ; total , 180. Gloucestershire , 63 and 116; total , 179. Overs. Maidens. Flowers (1st inns . Gloucestershire ).............. 21.2 1 1 R u n s. Wickets, 2 3 8
