James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882
6 4 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SC R I C K E T E R S ' A N N U A L . Mr. W. G. Grace's average was a trifle higher than in 1880 , but his innings before referred to at Nottinghamhelped him materially . Mr. Moberly, it will be seen, ran Mr. Grace very close , aud Mr. Cranston showed a marked improvement on his previous form, his average being 26.3 against 12.6 in 1880. Midwinter was hardly so successful as his colonial performances during the winter would have led one to expect , and Mr. Townsend's hitting was certainly not so telling as of old . In bowling Mr. W. G. Grace, Midwinter, and Woof were credited with 111 out of 151 wickets . Mr. Grace's was more expensive , and certainly less deadly , than he used to be, and of the three Midwinter was the most reliable . Woofwas not quite so effective as was expected , though his figures for a slow bowler are very creditable , but as he is quite young there is every chance of his developing into a first -class player , R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Both Counties were fairly strong , Gloucestershire having a muchbetter team than usually represents it in London. Pooley , owing to a bad hand, was unable to keep wicket for Surrey, and Mr. W. W. Readtook his place . The weather was cold and showery , and the cricket all round was hardly up to the best average . Surrey introduced a new amateur in Mr. C. W. Wilson , a candidate for the Oxford team; Gloucestershire a young professional in Painter . The amateur was unsuccessful , but Painter hit freely , if he did little else with the bat , besides taking two wickets for ten runs . Mr. E. M. Grace's 77 for Gloucestershire in the first innings was the highest score of the match. If not quite orthodox in style , it was a striking example of the
