James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882

6 2 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS ANNUAL. (7) Derbyshire v. Kent. Maidstone, August 18 , 19, 20,1881 . Derbyshire in this match had its full strength , but Kent was very weak, not only losing the help of Mr. Frank Penn, but also of Messrs. Renny- Tailyour and E. F. Tylecote , the two last of w h o mjust previously had been scoring well for the County. Mr. Docker's hitting powers were greatly favoured by the narrow limits of the Mote Park ground, and in the first innings he contributed 107 to the total of 220. Kent might have been expected to score fairly from the Derbyshire bowling ; but the batting was poor , and a freely hit first innings of 58 by O'Shaughnessy was the only redeeming feature . Derbyshire , when they went in a second time, only required 74 to win, and of these Mycroft and Rigley obtained 53 before a wicket fell . The policy of Kent in opening with two fast bowlers was very doubtful , as the wicket drying fromheavy rains grew sticky , and as it was Mr. J. Patterson's medium-pace bowling very nearly pulled Kent through , He took five wickets for twelve runs , and it is quite possible , had he been put on earlier , that Kent might have turned the tables . Derbyshire won b ythree wickets . Derbyshire, 220 and 74 (seven wickets down) ; total , 294. Kent, 169 and 124; total , 293. J. Patterson (Derby, 2ndinnings ). H. Evans(Kent, 1st innings ). Rainprevented any play except on the first day, and the gamedid not admitof the completion of the Yorkshire innings . The ground at Bradford hadbeen found to wear so badly that the Captains had arranged to change the wicket after each innings , and this plan was carried out as long as the matchlasted . Yorkshire on the day's play were 65 runs ahead with one wicket to fall . Yorkshire , 141 (nine wickets down). Derbyshire , 76. B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S .
