James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882

THE COUNTIES IN 1881 . 5 9 undoubtedly , would be greatly benefited by an infusion of young players in every department. The season was productive of two promising young amateurs in Mr. L. C. Docker , a batsman with great powers of hitting with care likely to train on into a really first -rate player ; and Mr. H. Evans, a bowler whowas very successful both at Brighton and Maidstone , in the former case on a splendid wicket . In somemeasure these additions to the team were satisfactory , but with William Mycroft losing much of his deadliness , Hay, it is to be hoped , temporarily only out of form, real young professionals are what the County wants sadly , and a first class bowler and batsman whose services the executive could always claim would havebeen of more lasting good. Both sides were well represented , and the ground was so hard as to favour long scoring : Derbyshire were very lucky in getting rid of so dangerous a batsman as Mr. M. P. Lucas twice without a run, and indeed the totals of each eleven were less than might have been expected. Ellis made71 for Sussex in his first attempt, but otherwise there was little in the batting to call for special comment. Derbyshire wonby five wickets . Derbyshire , 153 and 123 (five wickets down); total , 276. Sussex , 166 and 109 ; total , 275 .
