James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882
T H E M A R Y L E B O N E C L U BI N 1 8 8 1. 5 1 umpiredecided in favour of the batsman. Oxford, it will generally be admitted, hadthe best of the luck, and there will be manystill of opinion that if the same elevens played again , the result in a majority of cases would be different . In bowling , the Cantabs greatly disappointed their friends beyonda doubt. Mr. C. T. Studd kept straight and a good length , as he always does, but Mr. A. G. Steel singularly was, considering his sub- sequent achievements with the ball for Lancashire , unsuccessful , and Mr. Ford was very easy. With the exception of that of their Captain, the Oxford bowling was even weaker than that of Cambridge. Mr. Evans was very muchfavoured by the ground, but he worked very hard from the first to the last ball , and no bowler ever more thoroughly deserved success . Mr. G. B. Studd, the batsmanon whose trial form Cambridgehad placed so muchreliance , was very unfortunate each time. In the first innings he was bowled by a very fast one from Mr. Evansin a bad light , and in the second hewascaught at the wicket . Itwasfancied that the batting of Oxford would mainly depend on three batsmen-Messrs . Patterson , Trevor , and Leslie , and so it proved. Of Mr. Patterson's second score of 107 not out too much cannot be said . His defence never wearied, and his play was the more worthy of praise as early in the innings his hand was badly hurt . His is the only instance of a batsman in an Inter -University match going right through the innings , O X F O R D . W . H. Patterson (Harrow), c Ford, b Steel A. H. Trevor (Winchester ), c Hone, b C.
