James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882

4 4 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL (8) M.C.C. and Groundv. Kent, Lord's , June 2 and3, 1881. Kentwasopposed by a very indifferent eleven of M.C.C. , but its bowling was so weakthat most of the Marylebone batsmen scored in one innings or the other. Mr. Frank Penn, whenhe went in, was at first hardly at home, but after he settled down, his play was quite up to his best form, and his 102 represented more than one half of the Kentish aggregate from the bat. Mr. A. F. Ford (37 and 76) was the chief scorer for Marylebone , and his hitting was very clean , his off -drives being particularly hard. Keut went in on the second afternoon with only an hour and twenty-five minutes left for play, but Mr. Frank Pennwas unable to bat owing to a slight sunstroke , and the rest madea poor display . Rylott in thirteen overs took four wickets , those of the two Hearnes, Lord Harris , and Mr. Jones, for only three runs , andbefore time the Kentish players were all out for 53, of which Boys and O'Shaughnessycontributed 34. M.C.C. wonby 216 runs. M.C.C. , 262 and 231; total , 493. K e n t, 224a n d53 ; total , 277, Rylott (2nd Innings, Kent) O v e r s. M a i d e n s. 2 2 1 5 R u n s. The first of the two trial matches at Lord's in anticipation of the Inter- University contest . The Hon. Ivo Bligh , the Cambridge captain, who had beenunable to play previously owing to illness , madehis first appearance of the year, but the Cantabs just before had been unfortunate enough to lose the services of their fast bowler , J. R. Napier, whostrained himself in the matchwith Lancashire , at Liverpool , and he was muchmissed in the match. The University had the worst of the luck throughout , in going in to bat late onboth of the first days, on the first night in a badlight , and the groundwas never in the best order for themfor run-getting . Marylebone had a strongish eleven ,but Midwinter with 44 and 35 was the highest contributor , and no high scores were made, though Mr. A. G. Steel was not on the spot ,andthe Cambridge bowling was certainly not seen at its best . The University had a difficult task set themwhenthey went in with 261 to win, but thanks chiefly to a useful score of 70 by Mr. G. B. Studd, they madea plucky fight of it , and wereonly beatenby 70 runs . M.C.C. , 232 and 205 ; total , 437. Cambridge, 177 and 190; total , 367. Barnes (2nd Innings, Cambridge) Overs. Maidens. TheMarylebone eleven was a little stronger than it had been against Cambridge, and the result was, curiously enough , to those who hoped to get a line from the performances of the two University elevens , almost identical with that of the previous Saturday , at Lord's , For M.C.C.
