James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882

T H EM A R Y L E B O N E C L U BI N 1881. 4 3 the batting of the young Lancashire professional , Briggs , in the second innings of the County was the feature of the match, and it was his cool andplucky play at the crisis whenthings were apparently all in favour of M.C.C. , that enabled the County to win by two wickets . Aswas only to be expected with the wicket in run-getting order, the matchwas productive of some very high scoring on both sides . The University hadnot its best eleven with Hon. Ivo Bligh , Messrs . Ford and C. P. Wilson away, but the two brothers Studd (G. B. and C. T.) and Mr. Steel were all fortunately in form, and the Studds were accountable for as many as 260 runs in the two innings ; G. B. contributing 80 and 48 , and C. T. 62 and 70 not out. W h e nsix wickets of Marylebone were down, 30 runs were still wanting to avert a follow on, but Alfred Shaw and Mr. R. Miller , a Cantab who had previously been tried for the University , entirely altered the aspect of the game. The two batsmenraised the score from 154 to 302, and Shaw's 78 not out, it m a ybe remarked, is the highest score he has ever madein a first class match. W h e nplay ceased M.C.C. had gained 74 of 187 runs wanted to win for the loss of two wickets . M.C.C. , 302 and 74 (two wickets down) ; total , 376. Thewicket hadsuffered materially from recent rains , and the batsmen wereunable to calculate the rise of the ball with any confidence . Mr. Hornby winning the toss for Marylebone put the County in first , and , as the result proved, wisely . Noneof the Yorkshiremen could do anything with the bowling of Alfred Shaw and Mycroft , and so unreliable was the form that Allan Hill proved to be the highest scorer on the side with 20 and 9. Mr. Hornby (43) and Alfred Shaw(30 not out) contributed 73 to the first Marylebone total of 100, but Mr. J. Shuter's second score of 43 not out was the best on the side , and helped considerably to the Club's easy winwith eight wickets to spare . M.C.C., 100 and 74 (two wickets down) ; total , 174.
