The return of Murdoch's team produced several extra matches of importance , and in addition there were four International contests . The twenty-fifth match betweenVictoria and N e w South Wales was played at Melbourne during Christmasweek, and despite the good play of D. Gregory, Evans, and Massie for N e wSouth Wales, the Victorians w o nby two wickets , after a close fight ; Allan , " the bowler of a century ," and Elliott literally pulling the game out of the fire . In the return at Sydney, in February , Victoria again wonby 31 runs, chiefly through Allan's fine bowling, and this victory m a k e sthe Victorians four matchesahead. In both matcheswith South Australia Victoria was also successful . In the first , at Melbourne, Horan, a prominent member of Gregory's eleven of 1878 , made 113 in the first innings , and in the return at Adelaide Boyle, whovisited Englandwith both Australian teams, got 108 out of a total of 191 in first innings of Victoria . At Melbourne Jesse Hide , a few years ago one of the Sussex Eleven , played an excellent second innings of 48 for South Australia . Victoria w o n the first matchby seven wickets , the return by 151 runs. TheInter- University match between Victoria and New South Wales took place , but on this occasion NewSouth Wales had a most decisive victory by an innings and 125 runs , J.
