A very effective medium-pace bowler , with a great break ; was of great use to the county in 1880 , but owing to ill- health had to leave England, and his bowling was very muchmissed. FOORD-KELCEY, W. (Eton and Oxford ). Avery dangerous bowler on a queer wicket , but wants the ground to help him, and was perhaps not quite so straight last year as of old ; muchimproved as a bat , and hits freely well-set ; only played late in the season and then not often . HARRIS, Lord (Eton and Oxford ). A fine bat , playing in fine style and hitting with great freedom; left Englandin the middle of the season , and Kent did not recover his loss ; a fine field with a very smart return ; an energetic cricketer and enthusiastically fond of the game. W a sCaptain of the England Eleven v. Australia , at Oval, in 1880. MACKINNON, F. A. (Harrowand Cambridge). A steady and safe bat, but fell off greatly last year, only playing one good innings against York- shire ; a sure field . PENN, A. A goodslow left -hand round-arm bowler, with plenty of judg- ment; improved as a bat good field ; did not play much for the county. PENN, F. One of the very best amateur batsmen of the day, having plenty of defence and very great hitting power; not altogether safe in the field ; bowls at times ; was unfortunately , owing to illness , unable to play at the end of the year. JONES, K. S. (Cambridge ). Played fine cricket against Derbyshire in the first match of the season , but was rarely seen in the Eleven afterwards ; an excellent bat, with great defence ; a fine out-field and safe catch . PATTERSON, J. (Tonbridge). Played occasionally for the county ; good field ; fair bat; and at times useful as a change bowler (medium- pace left ), was very successful at the close of the Derbyshire match at Maidstone, taking five wickets for 12 runs. RENNY-TAILYOUR, H. W. (Cheltenham and R.E. ) Wasagain qualified by residence to play for Kent last year ; hits very freely all round, and gets his runs fast ; a fine field ; and bowls fast round as a change. TYLECOTE, E. F. S. (Clifton and Oxford). Played for Kent by residence ; a very keen cricketer ; good bat, with defence and no meanhitting power; an excellent wicket -keeper, standing up pluckily to the fastest bowling. BLIGH, Hon. Ivo (Cambridge ), PATTERSON, W. H. , and KEMP, M. C. (Ox- ford), play for K e n t. L A N C A S H I R E . APPLEBY, A. Still keeps up his reputation as a good straight left -hand bowler; an improved bat, and safe catch ; did not play often for his countylast season. HORNBY, A. N. (Harrow). Hadthe highest batting average of the year in first -class matches; a brilliant batsman, having fine defence combined with great punishing power, though at times a little too much given to hitting a splendid field , and certain catch ; can use either hand ; provedhimself an excellent Captain . JOHN, H. C. (Stonyhurst). A youngplayer of promise ; can bat ; bowls slow round-a r m; andfields well. LANCASHIRE, O. P. (Rossall and Cambridge ). Good bat, but unfortunate in scoring , plays in neat form ; is also a capital field .
