James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882

T H EA V E R A G E SI N 1881. 2 4 3 but for the dispute which ended in his retirement from the Nottinghamshire Eleven. Lancashire had an extraordinary quartett of slow bowlers in Mr. A. G. Steel , Barlow, Nash, and Watson; it mattered little which went on first . Flowers showed such a decided improvement that it was hardly a surprise to find h i mestablishedin Shaw'sabsenceas the first bowlerofNotts. Yorkshire owed muchof its success to Peate and Bates , and the former was fairly entitled to be considered the best manof the year. Indeed , his figures , considering the matches in which he played and the amountof work he did, were wonderful . Crossland did not play for Lancashire till late , butbis pace told whenhe was tried , and his " yorkers " were very effective . Mr. Alfred Penn played little , though his slow left round-arm came off with great success against Sussex and Surrey ; and from the consistent wayin whichRylott has bowled for years , it is rather surprising that he has not been allowed a better chance in big matches. Mr. C. T. Studd and Mid- winter maintained their reputations , and Emmettrarely failed to come off whenhe waswanted. Several bowlers though, who were prominent in 1880, showed a falling off , among them Messrs . W. G. Grace, A. J. Ford, Green- field , O'Shaughnessy, Potter , Mr. Robertson, and Wootton. Jones re -appeared in the Surrey Eleven , considerably to the county's advantage , as will be seen , and if the season gave birth to no youngsters likely to rival Freeman or Alfred Shaw, it produced, at least , some new bowlers of fair promise in Mr. Evans, of Derbyshire , Attewell and E. Mills , of Notts, and Burton, of M i d d l e s e x . O V E R100 W I C K E T SD U R I N GS E A S O N . Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets.
