IF no newbowlers came to the front during last season , more than one of those previously before the public added considerably to their reputation . Mr. A. G. Steel , Bates , and Peate are the only bowlers who can claim to have taken more than 100 wickets in first -class matches. The figures attached to these three are significant as showing the markedsuccess which attended the slower deliveries , and, indeed, the faster bowling was altogether at a discount . Allan Hill was never straighter or more effective than early last season , when he unfortunately broke down, but Morley and Mycroft , though the former was no doubt affected considerably by the Nottingham dispute , were heavily punished at times , and Emmettis now anything but a fast bowler. Alfred Shawwas very successful early in the year, and his per- formance in James Lillywhite's benefit , at Brighton, at the close of the season , which will not soon be forgotten , was a sufficient guarantee that he wouldhave been again very near the foremost in the averages of the year
