T H E UNIVERSITIESA N D PUBLICS C H O O L SI N 1881. 1 7 9 wasby no means favourable to slow bowling ; as a bat , has improved im- mensely, and though very unlucky at the commencementof the season , at the end could always be relied upon for a score ; a fair field . Rev. W. Humphrys (811): a good steady bowler , and a fine field ; has been very unlucky throughout the season as a bat ; to his exertions and coaching the eleven owe their proficiency in the field . A. L. Duncan (7.1 ) : fair bat , but cannot be relied upon for runs ; has not been tried much as a bowler ; as a field , mightimprove; muchmore careful this year than last in his running between the wickets . W. H. Ellis (6) : makes runs , but in a style peculiar to himself ; won his place in the team mainly through his fielding . F. Rees(4.6 ) : has not done much as a bat this season ; safe catch , especially in the long field ; particularly useful as a long -stop . C. J. Pugh (Cap- tain, 3-10 ) : has made a very good Captain for the season ; good but unlucky bat; fair medium-pace bowler , and fine point . E. L'Estrange (2.7 ) : has improvedin his batting during the season ; fair fast bowler. R. Topham (4) : young yet, but has the making of a good cricketer ; a good catch and field ; has not played all the season . R E A D I N G S C H O O L . THEELEVENIN 1881 .-- A. Cooper (4.6 ) : bats in good style , and has much improved both in batting and fielding since the beginning of the season . J. Gardner (3): is not successful as a batsman , but is a neat field , and throws in well . J. Greenfield (11.1 ) : the steadiest bat in the eleven , and should next year develop into a good cricketer ; a fair point , and bowls moderately sometimes. *F. J. Hayward(8.2 ) : hardly came up to the expectations formedof himat the beginning of the season ; cuts well , but lacks driving power, and is too impatient to score ; a good field and safe catch. *T. R. P. Herbert (13.7) : the best bat in the eleven ; played somevery goodinnings this year, his long reach enabling himto drive very hard; a fair change bowler, but an indifferent field ; has received the bat for the best batting average . G. H. Jenkins (8.6 ) : as a bat has improved muchthis season , though somewhatunlucky ; a good bowler on a wet wicket, and a reliable field . L. Loy (5.9 ) : a useful all -round memberof the eleven ; bowls very fairly , but did not comeup to his last year's form ; rather a weakbat, but hits well at times ; as Captain of the team for last season , gave general satisfaction . *M. R. Neligan (7.1 ) : a good bat , though somewhat lacking defence , being able to hit well to all parts of the field ; a good point , and can take the wicket with credit ; unfortunately was unable to play during the latter half of the season . C. Phillips (6.3 ) : is hardly a reliable bat, but sometimes gets runs whenthey are mostwanted; a good change bowler. *E. H. Ripley (1) : in batting never did much; a fair long-stop, and with his break , ought to have been a good bowler . S. Tulloch (5.14 ) : a good steady mediumpaced bowler, keeping well on the wicket ; a painstaking bat, andthe best field in the eleven ; has received the bat for the best bowling analysis .
