Ratcliffe (Captain , 15.3 ) : has filled his post as Captain excellently ; is certainly the best bat in the eleven , having a good defence coupled with fine hitting powers , being especially strong on the off side ; a good field at long-leg . *L. H. Gunnery (13-12 ) : the best all -round player ; has wonderfully im- proved in his batting , hitting very hard, and having a strong defence ; is a very effective mediumpace bowler, with good pitch , always on the wicket ; the best field in the eleven . B. S. Cave ( 11.3 ) : a safe and reliable bat, plays forward well , drives well to the off ; has kept wicket well throughout the season . *T. H. Vernon (5.2 ) : a very good fast round-arm bowler, with considerable work from the off ; at times bowled with remarkable success ; fair bat; fields well in the slips . W. J. Scott (Captain for 1882, 5-24) : though a good bat, has had bad luck, and has not fulfilled the hopes enter- tained of him; a good slow bowler ; splendid field . W. A. Buck (8.7 ) : gets runs in a style of his own; bowls well at times ; a smart and energetic field . *H. C. Coghlan (7-11 ) : a tremendously hard hitter ; useful slow bowler ; uncertain and lazy field . *R. W. Bolton (8.6) : is rather too fond of playing back ; has a pretty cut ; fields well at cover -point . D. P y m (6.11 ) : a fair bat ; might improve in the field , M. C. A. Simmonds : has long -stopped well throughout the season ; a good bat , but might improve if hetook pains . *J. S. Phillips (4) : a poor bat; fields well anywhere. A. D. Fripps (3.1 ) : fields very well at point ; as a bat has manythings to learn, is too afraid of hitting ; will bowl well if careful . O S W E S T R Y C H O O L . THE ELEVEN IN 1881.-W. L'E. Eames (11.11 ) : a very good bat ; much morereliable this year than last ; has combined cricket with hitting , and has taken the advice given him last year in this Annual; a goodfield , at times brilliant at cover-point ; a fast , but erratic , bowler. H. P. Cuthbert (10-8) : perhaps the best bat in the team; hits very well , especially to square leg ; has very strong defensive powers ; has fielded long leg, but has hadvery little work. J. A. Ward(10.5 ) : has made some big scores , but on the whole has been very lucky ; a moderate wicket -keeper, but an ex- ceedingly slow field elsewhere ; very slow also between the wickets . F. P. Owen(9.6) : the slow bowler of the eleven ; has taken a large numberof wickets this season ; this was all the more to his credit , as the dry season
