Luxton(27.8 ) : avery good bat, though he had his share of luck ; has a good defence, but can hit hard and punish loose bowling ; his average of nearly 28 against the best clubs in North Devonwas very creditable ; is afair mediumpace bowler, and very energetic in promoting the interests of the game. F. W. Taplin (23-1 ) : a goodbat, hardly ever failing to get double figures ; a quick field and safe long-stop . W. Thomas (22.9 ) : played very steadily , and generally made a good score ; bowledvery well . H. H. Taplin (18·12) : a very safe and steady bat, and a good bowler. R. M. Latham(8.10 ) : muchimproved in batting , andoften successful with slow underhandbowling. F. A. Coon (8.2 ) : played very well sometimes, but was not always successful . A. E. P. Hughes (7-12 ) : a good wicket -keeper and field , and a fair bat on his day ; sometimes very useful in bowling. A. E. Butt (6.5 ) : a fair player all round; has gone up to Sidney Sussex College , Cambridge. L. T. Oakley (3-3 ): a fair player , but wasnot so successful as was anticipated . L. H. Farrington (2.4) : a bard- working field . R. P. Chope (2) : a fair point ; has gone up to Trinity College, Cambridge. D U R H A M S C H O O L . DURHAMSCHOOL ELEVEN IN 1881.-E. B. Brutton (47 ) : Captain and has given universal satisfaction ; he wins the average bat for the third time with the magnificent average of 473, due in some degree to his large scores when" not out ; " destructive swift bowler, and in his usual place at point ; a brilliant catch and safe field . Rev. W. M. Wadsworth (11 ) : as a bats- m a nhas improved very much; good judge of a long field catch . *E. R. Shortt (4 ) : good material , but placed at a great disadvantage , both in batting and fielding , by being short -sighted . R. W. Armstrong ( 114 ) : has done great service to the eleven this year by his bowling -medium , with break both ways; safe field ; left -handbat ; inclined to hit too much. *R. B. Lattımer (134) : batting much improved , hits well all round ; bowling a little fallen off, but he still keeps up his reputation as a very good field . F.G. caint (34) : has been very unfortunate ; a steady bat, but frequently failed to score ; medium bowler , with fair pitch . J. P. Matthews (47) : through want of practice did not turn out so well as was expected ; neat field at cover-point . C. Haslenood (8 ) : requires time to develop ; deficient in strength , but shows very good form ; safe field . *A. B. Featherstone (7 ) : good defence , and somewhat lucky in getting runs ; pretty forward play; promising long -stop . C. M. Cradock (6) : his principal fault is too muchback play , though he is , however , quite up to eleven form ; plays with a very straight bat ; fields well .
