Mansfield : a painstaking captain , and managedto get a good eleven together ; his batting improved as well as his wicket-keeping, which were both up to public school form; a goodfield . *W. N. Lea : was not so successful in his batting as had been hoped; he occasionally hit very hard , but was not to be depended upon ; a fair field ; a fast but erratic bowler. *C. L. Hickley : improved again last season in his batting and was not in such a violent hurry to get runs on first going in ; far awaythe best bowler in the eleven , as his average will prove; a moderate field . *C. M. Lambrick : a very patient and successful bat, though still not so good on the off side as he should be; fielded well at point throughout . H. G. Ruggles -Brise (Capt. for 1882) : did good service to the eleven with the bat, though not always in the best form ; might be a useful bowler with practice ; a fair field. *N. E. W. Stainton : neither improved nor fell off from last year's form; had a nice cut and wasa patient bat; a moderate bowler and fair field . *G. F. Hornby: might be good bat if he would makemore use of his abnormally long reach ; sometimes bowled effectively ; a moderate field . A. R. Cobb : ought to be a useful m a nnext year ; a fair bat with someidea of wicket -keeping , and a moderate field . G. W. Ricketts : ought to practice bowling and fielding ; as a bat hewants to comeout more, and play harder. *G. S. S. Vidal : could hit very hard all round, though he lacked style as a bat ; a capital field . H. G. Saunders - Davies : an improving bat , and with practice m a ydo well ; a m o d e r a t efield.
