Pickering : as Captain , has managedthe club well , perhaps would be better for a little more resource in the field ; plays good sound cricket , and needs only confidence to be a good bat ; a good fast bowler . F. C. Homfray (Captain for 1882 ) : a good medium-pace bowler , with a difficult break ; an excellent field ; as a bat , needs defence , is a little stiff , and too fond of a hit . *A. B. Evans : a fair change bowler ; an uncertain field ; a stiff bat , and too fond of a hit and a " pull ." C. H. Marriott : a very pretty bat, but often strangely ineffec- tive fromwantof determination ; a fair field ; an erratic bowler ; very slow betweenthe wickets . *E. G.-J. Scovell : bats well and straight on a good wicket , but jerks too much to have a strong defence , and is easily beaten w h e nthe ball bumpsor breaks ; might make a good slow bowler; a fair field . W. Cheriton : a straight steady bat, can hit at times ; a little awk- ward but effective as a wicket -keep. G. E. W. Cranage : has disap- pointed expectation as a bat , but once or twice played well ; seems to find it difficult to judge bowling and get downto it ; a tolerable field . F. W. Burbury: plays good cricket , and improves , sometimes awkward on the leg side, should make an excellent bat ; a fair field . W. W. Meredith : has disappointed expectation , plays an unsteady game, and does not get d o w nto the bowling, but seems as though hehas a good style ; an uncer- tain field . W . V. Thomas: a w k w a r dat the wicket becauseheholdshis bat wrong ; has a good defence , and when he shifts his hands hits fairly ; bowls a little , and a fair field . H. J. Grosvenor : as afield , first -rate , except in the return of the ball ; has a poor defence .
