Leaf: an extremely useful bat with great powers of defence , and whenhe likes of hitting , but his style is very stiff ; his bowling has beenvery successful , having a tremendous break from the leg ; a brilliant field anywhere; average ball for 1881. *E. Mahon: a steady bat with a hardclean cut behind point, where he has mademost of his runs; a good change bowler , and covers a great deal of ground in the field , but returns the ball badly. F. E. Rome: a good useful bat ; can defend his wicket, andpunish loose bowling ; a good field , and able to take the wicket as a change(captain for 1882). *H. J. Nott : a good steady mediumbowler on his day; moresuccessful at the beginning than the end of the term; an uncertain bat and fair field . *F. B. Windeler : A fair bat, but did not im- prove much; a brilliant field at point. G. R. Lascelles : a good and at times brilliant wicket -keep ; rather handicapped by a bad finger ; a poor bat, but later in the season developed certain powers of hitting ; can field awayfrom the wicket . K. R. Marley : a fair fast bowler, but very unsuc- cessful , not coming up to last year's promise ; can hit hard when set ; rather inclined to be lazy in the field , but has a hard return . E. H. Buck- land: bats in goodstyle , but with no great power of punishing a ball ; a fair change bowler, and a good field ; would be a safer scorer if he would stand up to the ball .
