Surtees (Captain for 1881 ) : by careful supervision and election has managedto get together a good eleven ; a decidedly brilliant bat, with strong forward play and fine hitting power, but is , perhaps , a little deficient in patience ; a good field anywhere . *R. H. B. Simpson : has steadily improved as a bat ; he has a strong de- fence and good off -hit , and is steady and careful ; a first -rate cover -point . *W. A. Wheeler : A fast bowler , with a high delivery ; on his day gets many wickets ; a hard hitter . *H. A. Debenham : plays with plenty of confidence , and generally scores , having good hitting powers all round ; a good point . E. B. Raikes : one of the best bowlers w e have ever had, combining great judgment with a puzzling action ; a promising bat, with powerful forward play ; as a field not always on the alert . W. Williamson : has strong wrist play, but too much flourish , and if with more pains he could get rid of this he wouldbe a good bat ; long-stop to the eleven . E. Malden: keeps the wicket for the eleven ; a fine and clean hitter , with strong back play. R. G. Legge : a somewhat lucky bat, whohas scored in mostmatches ; has a good eye, and rather a stubborn defence ; a good field . *H. S. Travers : change bowler to the eleven , with good pace and fair pitch ; has been prevented by illness from playing through the season . *J. Corbett : plays with nerve and firmness , with a good cut and leg hit ; throws in well from long -leg . *W. O. Wilson : has developed late as a bat, but shows good promise , playing hard on the ball and hitting well ; a good field . *P. M. G. Maclagan: was unable to play at first , owing to an acci- dent ; a painstaking and improved bat with fair hitting powers , but weak defence ; a fair change slow-bowler, with a high action .
