Vizard (Captain ) : worked very hard as Captain , and the eleven had considerable success , in spite of their weakness in bowling ; a good bat, driving well ; has wonthe bat given by the County for the best average ; a good field at mid-off . *B. D. Carey : not so successful as hadbeen hoped in batting ; was not able to play very much owing to an examination ; a splendid field at cover-point , and a fair change bowler . *W. P. Richardson : was again of the greatest use as wicket -keeper , at whichpost he is very steady and safe ; improved a good deal in batting , and played several useful innings late in the season . * T. C. Wilson : is a steady bat with good defence ; a useful slow change bowler, and good field . W. Evershed (Captain for 1882) : is a straight mediumpace bowler , but has hardly improved as muchas was expected ; hits hard, but is weak in defence ; a good field . *C. G. Carnegy : plays in a lively style , but is too anxious to hit, andoften sacrifices his wicket through impatience ; a very good point ; sometimes bowls as a change. *F. H. Wheeler : fell off very muchin batting , partly through illness ; defence very weak ; fields well far out . J. H. Brain : promises to be a good bat , whenstronger and more set ; strong in defence ; took to bowling in the middle of the season and got a few wickets ; a good field . K. J. Key : a fair and medium pace bowler , with considerable twist from the leg , but must take far more trouble , especially with regard to pitch , if he is to be really good ; wonderfully improved as a bat , and ought to be most useful next season ; a good field . *H. Lloyd- Williams : bats well on a goodwicket, but his style is against him on one that is uncertain ; fields well far out . H. B. Powell : is a promising fast bowler, and had a good deal of success at the end of the season ; not muchof a bat yet, and he should learn to be quicker and more lively in the field .
