Evans (Clifton ), captain : a fine fast right -handed bowler ; an excellent captain , and thoroughly deserved the success he met with in the University matches; a very good and active field ; at times a dangerous bat. G. C. Harrison (Clifton ) : at times a successful slow bowler, but has not done so well as last year ; moderate bat and field . M. C. Kemp(Harrow) : a good wicket -keeper , but hardly kept up his Harrow reputation ; very useful bat . C. H. F. Leslie (Rugby) : a thoroughly sound bat, with wonderful defence and great punishing power; proved himself one of the best bats of the day; a fine field and thrower from long leg. N. McLachlan(Loretto ) : a thorough cricketer in every department of the game; as a batsmanknowsno fear ; captain for 1882, and likely to makea very energetic one. W. H. Patterson (Harrow): a very fine defensive bat, has improved wonderfully since last season ; good field ; can bowl a little ; his not out innings against Cambridgewill long be remembered. E. Peake (Marlborough) : a good fast right -handed bowler, does not come quite so fast as he looks , quick field , and generally knocks up someruns. G. E. Robinson (Private ) : a fast left -hand bowler, very quick off the pitch , coming with his arm, will improve as he gets stronger ; slow in the field , but hasbeenk n o w nto m a k ea fine catch. W . A. Thornton (Winchester) : a very useful all -round m a n; a moderate bowler ; good bat, with awkward style ; safe field . A. H. Trevor (Winchester ) : a fine pun- ishing bat with a commanding style ; brilliant but uncertain field . Α. Ο. Whiting (Sherborne ) : played some very good innings at Oxford , seemed rather puzzled by the pace of the ground at Lord's ; likely to turn out a good cricketer ; very fair wicket -keeper .
