Ivo Bligh (Eton and Trinity ), Captain : unable owing to ill -health to play till the last three matches; a fine batsman, with great driving power ; a brilliant out -field , and equally good near the wicket , as his exceeding smartness at point last sum- merproved . A. G. Steel (Marlborough and Trinity Hall ) : though not quite in his best format the commencementof the season, still maintained his position as one of the very best all -round players in England, being a splendid bat with great power of defence and hitting ; one of the two best bowlers in England , and a perfect field anywhere . His performances for Lancashire with bat and ball were almost unparalleled in county cricket . A. F. F. Ford (Repton and King's) ; a most useful m a nin any eleven ; batted in fine form for the University , and was consistently useful with the ball ; was unable to play in all the matches. H. Whitfeld (Eton and Trinity ) : also absent from the eleven till the London matches ; showed the same unwearied patience at the wicket as ever , besides gaining some
