In ten of the sixteen engagementsthe eleven were successful , mostly by decisive majorities , and with the exception of their two reverses at the hands of the Lancashire eleven , they were only once beaten, b y Gloucestershire , at Sheffield . They were singularly unfortunate in losing for a great part of the season the services of Allan Hill , who broke down whenhe was bowling in brilliant form, and in a few fixtures Ulyett was also unable to play , owing to an accident . With their full strength the Yorkshiremenwould have madea good fight with Lancashire , and, indeed, onthe form of the Sheffield match, where luck Lad muchto do with their defeat , it was a very close thing . E. Lockwoodand Ulyett ran a good race for the first place in the batting averages , but the latter's 37 left him two points ahead. Emmettand Bates were both equally successful with bat andball, but the great feature of the Yorkshire season was the magnificent bowling of Peate, and his summaryof 110 wickets for an average of less than twelve runs fairly entitles himto be considered the best slow bowler of the day.
