T H EC O U N T I E S I N 1 8 8 1. 9 9 (1) Sussex v. Yorkshire. Sheffield , June 20, 21, 22, 1881. Sussexmadean excellent start , thanks to Messrs. M. P. Lucas (51 ) & Ellis (53), but the example of these gentlemen was not followed , and though the first wicket realised 113 runs, all were out for 187. Chiefly through the hitting of Ulyett (73), and the stubborn defence of E. Lockwood(58) , Yorkshire headed their opponents by 52 runs, and Peate and Bates were so irresistible w h e nSussex w e n tin a second time that the m a t c hw a s soon finished . Yorkshire had in the end only to get 30 to win, and Sussex were beaten by nine wickets . Sussex , 187 and 87; total , 274. Yorkshire , 239 and38 (one wicket down) ; total , 277. Rain occasionally interfered with the play , but the ground was never very difficult at any period of the game. Yorkshire , until the fourth wicket fell , badefair to make a very large total , but the batting of the tail was very tame, and the last six batsmenonly added 25 runs to the total of 247, of whichUlyett contributed 69, andEmmett52. Charlwood(58 not out and 37) and Mr. Bettesworth (32 and 59) played good cricket for Sussex, but the ball was'slippery from the wet throughout the game, and the chief scorers on both sides were singularly favoured with luck. Peate's bowling was the chief feature of the match, which Yorkshire won by six wickets . Yorkshire , 247 and 73 (four wickets down); total , 320. Sussex , 149 and 169 ; total , 318.
