Unfortunately , some internal disagreement , the exact nature of which has not been properly explained , is said to have been responsible for Mr. Lucas' absence in the later contests , and Messrs. H. Whitfeld and Trevor, both of w h o mwould have been of great use, also showeda disinclination to assist their County. Thematch at the Oval was, perhaps, the only occasion on which Sussex was really well represented ; but even with all its available strength of batting , the bowling was so very weakthat its chances , particularly against the Northern shires , would always be very small . Unfortunately , too , Mr. Ellis was in nothing like his batting form of 1880, and his one really good performance was his 103 against Derbyshire , at Brighton . The Silver Cup presented by the President , Lord Sheffield , was won by Mr. Bettesworth , andhis cricket all round was undeniably of a kind to warrant the belief that he will reach the front rank of amateurs. Charlwood's hitting at times was quite up to his old form; but Mr. Greenfield and James Phillips were not so successful , and both had to give wayto a new amateur, Mr. W.
