James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882
T H EC O U N T I E SI N 1 8 8 1. 9 7 (3) N o r t hv South(Jupp'sBenefit). July 14, 15, 16, 1881. Hardlyso great a success as a player of such sterling worth, or one so universally and deservedly popular , deserved , owing to circumstances over which those to w h o mthe managementof the match was entrusted had no control . A Gloucestershire match prevented Mr. W. G. Grace's assisting the South, and the same reason will account for the absence of Midwinter. These two would have strengthened the South where they were weakest, in bowling, but as it was Hearne, Potter , Messrs. C. T. Studd and A. P. Lucas were the only bowlers on the Southern side . On a perfect wicket , as was only to be expected , they provedutterly unable to cope with the batting strength of the North, and the result wasa long score of 409, to which Bates contributed 93, Ulyett 92, and Selby 80. The South had a good batting team, but excepting Mr. Frank Penn, whosefirst score of 68 not out was a good display of free hitting , no one showed any form, andthe matchwas over early on the third day, end- ing, as wasgenerally foreseen , in a very easy victory for the Northby an innings and 91 runs. North, 409. South, 197 and 121 ; total , 318. A scratch match , arranged to eke out the Saturday afternoon , was not at all a success , andto judge by the experience of former affairs of the samekind, mightwell have been omitted. Though the match came to a premature termination, andwasnot onthe whole interesting , it is satisfactory to be able to state that the benefit realised for Juppbetween £400 and £500. S U S S E X .
