Cambridge , 317 and 27 (onewicket down); total , 344. Surrey , 173 and 170 ; total , 343 . C. P. Wilson (Surrey 2ndinnings) Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 1 7 3 4 5 3 0 (2) Gentlemenv. Players. June 30, July 1 and 2, 1881 . The selection of the Players ' eleven for this matchgave rise to some controversy . The committee of the Surrey County Club, it maybe premised , had resolved to support the Nottingham executive in their action against the seven professionals whohad entered into a combination not to assist the County except on their own terms . This resolve was the cause of much correspondence in some of the sporting papers , and there was certainly a diversity of opinion about the policy of the step. With that we have nothing to do; it is enough for us to explain the reason for the absence of Shaw, Barnes , and Morley , all of whom would most probably have been asked had they made their submission to the authorities in time . The Gentlemen were decidedly strong , though Mr. Read might have been substituted for Mr. Ellis , and not a few venturesome writers went so far as to prophesy in the papers that the Players had not a ghost of a chance. The batting on both sides was very uneven, but the cricket all round was brilliant , and the fielding some of the best that has ever been witnessed , even in this match. The first innings of the Gentlemen was very disappointing , except for Mr. Grace's finely played 100; but the best cricket of the match was shown in the second innings of the Players by Ulyett and Midwinter , who made 105 for the first wicket . Things looked bad for the Gentlemen when Messrs . Grace , Penn, Lucas , Evans, and Steel were all out for 41 out of 144 runs , and the Players bowled and fielded up so closely that their victory would have been fairly earned . A sit was two mistakes in the field interfered altogether with their chances at the crisis , and the Gentlemenwonby two wickets . P L A Y E R S .
