Surrey have never of late years been able to get the best of their match with the University , and though on this occasion they had mostof their available forces , the result was never in doubt, The County began fairly well with a total of 173 , but as was generally expected , this sumwasquite insufficient , with their very moderate bowling , to give them a chance. H a dMr. Lucas managedto catch Mr. Ford off his own bowling w h e nthe batsmanhad only madea few runs the outlook for Surrey would have been morefavourable . The chance though was not taken, and Mr. Ford's well hit 102 helped to hasten the ruin of the County , though in all likelihood there would have been the same result , even had he failed . A very fine score of 87 by Mr. W.W. Read redeemed the character of Surrey's
