In consequence the scoring all roundwas very low, and though Yorkshire were only able to reach a total of 113, this sufficed to give themthe victory by an innings and seven runs . Butler (17) and Oscroft (10) were able to get double figures in the first innings of Notts, but in the second not one of themcould gain even this small distinction , and Bates and Peate, the two Yorkshire slow bowlers , were never changed during the match. Shaw, Shrewsbury, Morley, Scotton , Selb Barnes, and Flowers were all still absent from the Nottingham team. Wright's fast left -hand round-arm bowling was very effective for the losing side , as will be seen. Yorkshire , 113. Notts, 71 and 35 ; total , 106. The wicket was all in favour of the batsmen, and the Surrey amateurs scored so rapidly from the bowling of Notts that they had been able to reach a total of 293 before five o'clock . Mr. Pontifex was the principal contributor with 89, but it was not a faultless innings , and the best cricket on the side was in Mr. Read's 63. The Surrey bowlers were the sameas in the previous match, but their fielding showed a decided improvement , and the result was their first victory of the year . E. Mills hit freely each time for Notts , but Gunn and Butler , of w h o mmost was expected , unfortunately for their side did little , or the gamemight have been moreinteresting . O nboth sides the scoring wasvery level , but G u n nand Butler madeamendsfor their ill success in Londonin the previous match, and their help in a great measure turned the scale .
