James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882

8 6 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. which was effective when the ground was difficult ; and he showed hitting powers which would be of great use with more practice . Wright's fast left handed bowling was very successful against Yorkshire at Nottingham; and Notts has a very promising all round youngster in Attewell , whois not only a useful slow bowler with plenty of work, but a batsmanwith a very neat style . The unfortunate and ill advised action of Shawand Shrewsbury, whoseinfluence no doubt induced the adhesion of Scotton , Morley, Selby, Barnes and Flowers, in refusing to play for the Countyexcept under certain conditions , did serious injury to Nottingham cricket during the past season. In shires less favoured in the possession of good players , such a combination mighthave worked irremediable evil , and it was certainly a convincing proof o f thew e a l t hof cricketersin N o t t sthatat a m o m e n t ' snoticetheexecutive should have been able to raise almost if not quite a new eleven , and one capable of , as events proved , with very slight practice , rendering a good account . Except in the opening match against Sussex , until August , the Countyhad to do as best it could without the services of seven of its best professionals , and it was therefore hardly a surprise that the summary of 1881 is not so brilliant as in former years . Withits best eleven Notts would havemadea bold bid with Lancashire for the chief place. N o doubt the lesson of last season will not be lost upon the seven players who leagued together , and if so, the gamewill have recovered from the blow it received . If they have only learned that they are not absolutely necessary to the welfare of the sport , and that there is no lack of young players such as Attewell , Butler , Mills , Wright and Shore only waiting the opportunity of makingtheir mark, perhaps even good will have comeout of what seemed tob ea n evil.
