James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1882

T H EC O U N T I E SI N 1 8 8 1. 8 1 96runsbefore the fall of the first wicket , the Amateurfinally scoring 68 and the Professional 79. A very finely played 67 not out by Mr. C. T. Studd could not prevent Middlesex following on in a minority of 157, but despite the state of the ground, through the careful play of Mr. C. T. Studd andthe H o n. A. Lyttelton in the follow , a fair show wasmade against the formid- able bowling of Lancashire , and with two wickets downfor 71 the match was drawn. Lancashire , 325. Middlesex , 168 and 71 (two wickets down) ; total, 239. (7) Lancashirev. Surrey. Oval, August 18 and19, 1881. A nextraordinary match, if only for the success of the fast bowling on thefirst day. Thewicket hadbeen carefully protected from the weather, and didnotplayat all falsely , andyet on the first dayan innings on each side wasover with only 114 runs scored . Mr. Parfitt's fast bowling enabled Surrey to get rid of Lancashire for the smallest score they madein a county match during the season (78). So far things looked well for the hometeam, but Crossland's " yorkers " even eclipsed Mr. Parfitt's achieve- ments, and Morris Read's 17 was the only double figure in a very short innings of 36. W h e nLancashire went in a second time Barlow (96) and Robinson (50) gave the Surrey bowlers considerable trouble , and the second wicket fell for 141, a curious contrast to the low scoring in the first innings of each side . At one time it seemed very doubtful whether Surrey would get the 42 runs required to reach Lancashire's first total , but the last three batsmen, Mr. Parfitt , Jones , and Barratt , managed to avert this disgrace , though they were beaten by 216 runs. Lancashire , 78 and255; total , 333. Surrey , 36 and 81 ; total , 117. Mr. Parfitt (1st innings Lancashire ) Crossland(Surrey) Overs. 2 4 1 3 Maidens. R u n s.
