Jones, andPatterson to help, the batting was very strong. George Hearne was unable to play, owing to illness , during a great part of the season , but at times Mr. C. M. Cunliffe bowled with great success ; and a young professional -one Wootton--who bowls fast left -hand round with a rather high delivery , proved a very useful addition to the eleven , doing a particularly good performance against Englandat Canterbury. Lancashire twice defeated Kent; but the eleven beat Sussex twice , and Yorkshire , Surrey , and Derbyshire in turn , so that on the whole the season was a very satisfactory one. The Kentish bowling was not good enough to get rid of the northerners for a lesser total than 245; but, on the other hand, Bates and Peate proved too muchfor thesouthern batsmen, whowere all dismissed for 73. Loekwood's 47 for Yorkshire , was the highest score of the match, which was drawn with only twowickets of Kent downin the follow on. Kent 73 and 59 (two wickets down); total , 132. Yorkshire , 245.
