Arevival of agood time -honoured match , despite the falling off that has been witnessed in the cricket of both shires . The bowling onboth sides was weak, and hence the scoring was high . Hampshire , though they opened with a respectable score of 252 (Mr. A. H. Wood77, Mr. F. E. Lacey 70), were nearly beaten in aninnings ; andthe Sussex total of 383 (Howard 106) was one of the best made by a county during the season . Sussex w o nbyten wickets . Sussex , 383 and 20 (no wickets down) ; total , 403 . Hampshire , 252 and 150 ; total , 402. (2) Hampshirev. Sussex. Southampton , August 30, 31 , 1880 . Agood wicket , but only moderate scoring on both sides . Ten batsmen reached double figures in the second innings of Hants , but still the total only amounted to 185. The Sussex bowling was undeniably superior to that of Hampshire ; and, indeed , the winners were all round the better eleven, so that the result was never in doubt. The highest score of the match was Charlwood's 40 in second innings of Sussex . Hampshire were beaten by five wickets . Hampshire , 91 and 185 ; total , 276. Sussex , 139 and 138 (five wickets down); total , 277. Juniper (1st innings , Hants) Overs. 2 0 Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 9 1 7 3
