The re -appearance of Hampshire in first -class cricket , cannot fail to be satisfactory to those who remember the important part it played in the early history of the game. Whether the time chosen for its revival was opportune or not is best knownto the authorities , but it certainly does not possess at present material stout enough to enable it to render a good account of itself with the moreimportant shires . Thetwo victories obtained overMaryleboneClubandGroundwere of no value as a test , as the elevens to which the county were opposed were third -rate . The long score they made at Brighton against Sussex , showed that they had at least some bats- m e ncapable of scoring , whenthe attack wasnot very formidable; but in bowling the eleven were very weak, and a considerable infusion of strength in this department is what the county wants most of all .
