Butfor the one defeat suffered by the eleven in their opening engage- ment at the Oval , Gloucestershire would have been able to boast a season without a reverse in County matches. Not one of the three contests in the north against Lancashire , Yorkshire , and Notts respectively , could be finished owing to rain , but on the whole the western eleven had every reason to be proud of the position they took in 1880; and while they defeated four of the five counties , to wit, Middlesex, Surrey , Yorkshire , and Lancashire , they had to meet, only one of their five drawngames- the return with Notts at Cheltenham, which was saved by the steady play of Mr. Fairbanks ended in a condition at all to their disadvantage . The statistics that follow will show howhigh was the average of the Gloucestershire scoring throughout the season , and it is worthy of note that the two innings against Surrey at the Oval were the only ones in which they failed to reach three figures .
