In bowling they were dependent on William Mycroft and Hay, two of the best fast bowlers in England , and to whose services the county has chiefly owed the few successes it has had of late . Butin batting , the eleven were quite as weak as, if not weaker, than in 1879; and in this respect , their show was generally poor . Foster , a dangerous hitter , opened the season well ; and Rigley ,and Mr. R. P. Smith , at times showedgood cricket , but on the whole the batting performances of the Derbyshire were inferior to those of anyother county, andadditional strength in this department is sadly needed. Out of eight matches , only twowerew o n, and five lost ; and as the two extra fixtures both ended unfavourably for Derbyshire , it will be seen that its summaryis not a very favourableone.
