Heavyrain just previous to the match caused the game to be all in favour of the bowlers , a matter for some little regret , as both counties , Middlesex especially , were strong with the bat . Morley at the start was almost unplayable ; and of a strong batting eleven , including Messrs . A. J. W e b b e, I. D. Walker, the brothers Studd, Pearson, Vernon, and C. I. Thornton, Mr. Pearson who played excellent cricket for his two scores of 24, alone got double figures each time for Middlesex . W m. Clarke , a medium-pace bowler , who had played a few years before for Notts , made his débût for Middlesex in this match, and with considerable success , as will be seen . Notts wonby nine wickets .
