Brother of the late William Lillywhite , the ' nonpareil ,' and father of James Lillywhite , of the present Sussex eleven . MECHEN, WILLIAM (Sussex ). Died March , 1880. Well known in connection with the Brighton, Brunswick, and Portslade Clubs ; was tried for the county in 1879 , and was a very promising player , being a good bat withhitting powers, and a fair wicket-keeper . PEASE, R. E. Died December13, 1879 , For manyyears a memberof the first eleven of the YoungAmerican Club of Philadelphia . R E A D, W. (Leicestershire ). Died in November, 1880. Abouttwenty- five years ago was one of the principal bowlers in Leicestershire . Lived at Bitteswell , near Lutterworth. SMITH, E. (Gloucestershire ). Died April 30, 1880. Prominently con- n e c t e dw i t hC h e l t e n h a mcricket. SOUTHERTON, JAMES(Surrey). Died June 16, 1880. W a sborn at Petworth (Sussex) on November16, 1827. Played first for Surrey in 1854, and for Sussex in 1858. In 1861 was engaged at Southampton, where he stayed till 1867, playing in the latter year for Sussex and Hants. Repre- sented the Players against the Gentlemenfirst time in 1870. and from 1873 played for Surrey alone. W a sat one time the most successful slow round- arm bowler of the day; and, when he liked , was an effective bat, hitting freely . A nexcellent judge of the game, and deservedly popular amongall classes of cricketers . STRATFORD DE REDCLYFFE, LORD. Died August , 1880. Was one of the Eton Eleven in the first recorded match between Eton v. Harrow, in 1805, playing then as ' Canning.' He died at the advanced age of 92 . W E N M A N, E D W A R DG O W E R(Kent). Died January 1, 1880. Born at Benenden, in Kent, on August 18 , 1803. W a s a first -rate batsman, with excellent back play, but it was as a wicket -keeper that he was most famous. Could stumpwith either hand, right or left , excelling especially in hitting leg-balls and running batsmen out. H e had to keep to Mr. AlfredMynn'stremendous bowling. W a s also an excellent managerof a m a t c h. WILLS, T. W. Died in Melbourne. W a sat one time Captain of the Rugby School Eleven , and played for Cambridge against Oxford .
