(Etonand Cambridge) : still the hardest hitter in England, but not so certain as formerly ; is apt to be lazy in the field ; plays for Middlesex by residence . V E R N O N, G. F. (Rugby) : one of the best amateur cricketers ; an effective bat, hitting freely ; and scored well throughout the year ; again repre- sented the Gentlemenv. Players ; very fine out-field ; with a sure pair o fh a n d s. W A L K E R, I. D. (Harrow) : one of the very best all -round cricketers ; being a fine batsman, with a talent for hitting on the off -side ; and a truly irreproachable field , especially at mid-off ; a good captain and excel- lent judge of the game. W A L K E R, . D. (Harrowand Oxford) : has not figured so muchin prominent matches of late ; a very clever slow round-arm bowler; and a run- getting bat in his own style . W A L K E R, V. E. (Harrow) : the best judge of the gameextant ; as a captain has no equal ; and is still a brilliant field in any position ; and a most effectiveb a t s m a n. W E B B E, A. J. (Harrowand Oxford) : a batsman with excellent defence , and at times bats well ; played somefine innings for Middlesex during theseason of 1880; a safe field . W E L M A N, F. Good all -round cricketer , has not played for his county of late. FOTHERGILL, A. J. Very good fast left -handbowler ; hits hard andwell, and ought to be a goodbat ; energetic all -round cricketer . FOWLER, H. Most dangerous batsman ; hits very hard , with good defence ; fair wicket -keeper, and capital point . FOWLER, W. H. Hits very hard and often makes runs ; uncertain bat ; weakfield , and, so far, unsuccessful fast bowler. Fox, H. F. Most promising young bat in the team; capital style ; pains- taking and hard -working field .
