As was only to be expected , while theAmateurswere at the headof the batsmen, the Professionals had the chief places amongthe bowlers to themselves . Messrs . Cunliffe , Evans, Morton, and A. G. Steel , were most successful amongthe Amateurs, but the best averages were those of Shaw, Rylott , Peate, Mycroft, Nash, and Watson; and Shaw's bowling will speak for itself . In all , he took 177 wickets , at an average of a little over 84 runs , an extraordinary feat taking into account the class of batsmenagainst whichhe hadto contend.
