DESPITEthe wet weather that markedsomepart of the season , the batting averages it will be seen are quite up to the standard of late years . Barnes , as will be noticed , was the only batsman to get over 1000 runs ; but Mr. Grace's average was again the highest , and his play towards the end of the season was as brilliant as ever . Lord Harris and Mr. Ellis played fine cricket for their respective counties ; and of the rest , Hon. Ivo Bligh , Hon. A. Lyttelton , Messrs . G. F. Grace , Hornby, R. S. Jones , Moberly , F. Penn , W. W. Read, I. D. Walker, A. P. Lucas , and A. J. Webbe among the amateurs , with Ulyett , Charlwood , and Lockwood, of the professionals , it will be seen , are credited with high figures .
