James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annnual 1881

T H EC H I E FC L U B SIN 1 8 8 0. 2 0 3 Three matches were played by the club away from Melbourne during the season, viz :- O n eat Maryborough, on 25th December; one at Creswick , 26th December; and one at Beechworth, on 27th and 29th March. Thefirst eleven played twenty-one matches, of which three were w o n, fifteen drawn, and three lost , but under circumstances which totally de- prived themof the character of defeats to the first eleven proper. Mr. L. S. Woolfcarried off the first eleven average for batting , with an average of 21:36 , Messrs . J. Rosser and J. Shepherd running him close with 20.84 and 20.42 respectively . Messrs . F. Baker and A. G. Major were also to the fore with good averages . Mr. W. H. Cooper again took the palmfor his bowling, with an average of 7.83 per wicket . Messrs. W. McLeanand J. Coupar also deserve mention for their bowling during the season . The second eleven played thirty -one matches , of which thirteen were won, twelve drawn, and six lost , which was highly satisfactory , Resultsof M a t c h e s.
