Despard : (Captain ) a good bat , cutting fairly , though rather wanting in defence ; as a bowler (slow-round) has not been very successful , except on dead wickets ; good wicket -keeper , fields well anywhere ; wants more energy to make a good captain . *R. K. Ellis : unfortunately for the school could not play during theearly part of the season ; has a very good defence, with fine hitting powers; fields smartly , especially at cover -point ; bowls a little . H. G. Ratcliffe : a fine hitting bat, driving splendidly to the off ; at times is apt to be lazy in the field (captain for 1881 ). *A. C. Curtis : good, but uncer- tain bat ; one of the best fields in the eleven , especially at short -slip . *M. J. Simmonds : gets runs in a style of his own; good and energetic field . G. W . Henderson: a hard-hitting bat, rather deficient in defence ; poor field . B. S. Cave : the prettiest bat in the eleven , driving nicely to the off , should learn to cut ; active in the field , a safe catch , and throwing in well to the wicket . M. A. Nicholas : a steady bat , with a pretty cut ; should practice forward -play ; good field . L. H. Gunnery : a good medium-paced bowler; steady , though unlucky bat ; fields well . T. H. Vernon : a good fast round-armbowler, with work fromthe leg ; bats steadily ; fields with energy . J. S. Phillips : a moderate bat ; fair field .
