L. Kaye: workedhardas captain ; was a good bat, and played well at beginning of season ; a good average school wicket-keeper. J. W. Mansfield : a good field and fair bat; his batting did not always come up to expectations which had been formed of it, owing, perhaps, to a little unnecessary flourish (captain for 1881). *G. J. Talbot : a useful slow bowler, steady and straight , and fielding his ownbowling well ; has muchto learn as a bat. W. N. Lea: a moderate bat, hitting well to leg ; he should study defence more; a fair field and fast bowler; sometimes successful as a change. C. L. Hickley : improved inhis batting , but is in too great a hurry to score ; a useful slow bowler, butwouldbe better with moreconfidence ; must learn to field . *S. K. M. Stobart : a useful m a n all round, without being quite first -rate in any one point ; too eager to make runs at once. C. M. Lambrick: a good bat, playing forward well , making most of his runs on the leg -side ; must learn to cut ; a fair field at point . *E. H. Hardcastle ; a straight fast left -hand bowler ; he just missed being a good bat owing to nervousness in first going in ; a poor field . H. G. Ruggles -Brise : made a good many runs without being a finished bat ; his fielding was not always up to the mark. N. E. W. Stainton : a patient bat ; a good m a nto go in first ; a fair change bowler . G. F. Hornby : makes no use of his unusually great reach in batting ; proved himself a useful bowler.
